Paving the Street Circuit well underway for Mandalika’s MotoGP

With completion expected in mid-2021, paving the new MotoGP racetrack on Lombok island, Indonesia, is now in full swing.

An official date for the MotoGP has not yet been announced, although promoter Mandalika Grand Prix Association (MGPA) anticipates a weekend later in the year subject to construction, homologation and testing being completed.

Intelligent positioning solutions specialist Aptella is working with PT. PP (Persero) Tbk, the main contractor and PT. PP Presisi as subcontractor as well as ITDC, the project owner, to deliver advanced positioning and paving technology that will ensure the works conform to international standards.

“We have five highly experienced geodetic engineers and surveyors working full time on site to support the operations,” said Mathew Connelly, Aptella Region Manager for South East Asia.  

“Our consulting services assist the contractors with managing the design process and taking it to the paving and milling machines via a 3D design, then checking the work using total stations, GNSS and digital levels,” he added.

To achieve the tight tolerances required on this project, an array of technology solutions has been deployed, including Topcon Millimetre GPS paving and milling systems. Millimetre GPS is a unique product that uses a high precision laser transmitter along with GNSS technology to deliver paving and milling operation to within a few millimetres of the design.

Unlike total station setups that require 1-2 instruments per machine on site, Topcon mmGPS can be used by all machines and survey rovers simultaneously with a single laser transmitter. In addition to the cost savings, this results in a more efficient and productive workflow without the need to setup and check multiple devices.

The Topcon GT robotic total stations and the Topcon DL-502s digital levels are used to check vertical accuracy of the work. MAGNET software is used to seamlessly transfer and update work between the office and field, with Civil3D used to complete the exchange of data.

Paving machine control systems

With many of the auxiliary service roads now complete, there are now three paving machines working full time to complete laying the street circuit.

“With our systems deployed from start to finish on site, Aptella is able to provide comprehensive workflow management and operational support for the project,” added Mr Connelly.

“Our team is also offering hands-on, practical training to the local workforce and project contractors, upskilling them to the latest construction methods as we work.”
